Under Review, Late Model Finish

The Grisdale Late Model finish from Saturday June 19th remains under review as of noon on Monday, as race officials will meet to discuss the events of the final lap.

As the race drew to a close on Saturday night a caution flag was thrown after the white flag had been shown to race leader Jeff Stewart in the Kubota Canada #56 Bruce Bennett Motorsports Chevrolet.

The caution flag was thrown for #28 Trevor Monaghan from Dundas whose car coasted to a stop on the front straight away, just to the inside of the apron.  Monaghan continued then to climb from the cockpit of the car, later sharing that an electrical fire had hurried his exit, clouded his vision and hindered his breathing.

Further issue occurred when a battle for a top five finishing position followed Monaghan out of corners three and four, resulting in an accident on the front straightaway.

Shane Maginnis in the Budd's BMW #03 was racing on the inside lane down to the bottom of the track against the Bentley Motorsports #29 of Mike Bentley.  Bentley had been blocking Maginnis for the previous two laps and nearly wrecked both cars after forcing his way in front of the #03 driver in a late race restart.

As the two battling cars came out of turn four it appeared that Maginnis was first to see the stopped #28 in front of him, and the now unprotected driver climbing from his car.  The #03 made a sharp right hand turn to avoid continuing his path straight into the #28, an accident that surely would have caused sever harm to the already disoriented Monaghan.  With Mike Bentley in the middle lane of the front straightaway heavy contact followed when Maginnis made his turn up track.  Both cars suffered cosmetic and what appeared to be bar damage but continued across the finish line and took the cool down lap.

The decision under review is to determine whether the race had been called complete by the caution flag prior to the accident involving Maginnis and Bentley.  The ruling will determine the official race finish.  The decision is expected to be shared Tuesday evening.
